Pro-Choice?
The following is a list of pro-life answers to common pro-choice statements. If you are pro-choice please keep an open mind as you consider the following statements:
Statement: I believe in a woman's right to choose.
Response: I too believe we have the right to make our own choices. We have the right to choose what neighborhood we want to live in, what religion to belong to, or to send our children to public or private school. We have the right to choose the candidates we want in office by exercising our right to vote; however, there are some things we don't have a right to do. For example, we don't have the right to murder someone. We can't "choose" to rob a bank and expect that to be okay. It's simple really ... some choices are wrong!
Statement: It's a fetus not a baby.
Response: Those who support abortion try to make an issue out of the language we use to describe the unborn child. Technically a fetus is a biological term describing an unborn child from the 9th week of conception until birth. This is simply a way of trying to confuse the situation and de-humanize the unborn child. There are many instances when more than one term can describe something. If I were to ask you about your deviated septum, you may not understand because that is a clinical term. However, if I were to ask you about your broken nose, you would know exactly what I asked you. Both terms are correct, however one is more common and personal.
In addition, I want you to ask yourself this: why is it that when the child is wanted, the mother refers to the unborn as her baby, but if it is an unwanted child the mother refers to the unborn as the "fetus" or "product of conception."?
Statement: I can do whatever I want with my body.
Response: On many levels, this statement is simply false and misleading. Legally there are thing that we are not allowed to do with our body. For example, it is against the law to use illegal drugs. In addition, this statement is misleading because it really doesn't pertain to abortion. The baby that exists is it's own person with it's own body. It is not really part of the mother. The mother is its home for nine months, but it is seperate from the mother. The baby can have a different blood type, different hair color, different eye color, or even be the opposite sex!
Statement: I only support abortion in cases of rape or incest.
Response: First off, these cases combined make up less than one percent of all abortions performed in the United States. Secondly, no matter how the child was conceived it doesn't change the child's basic right to life. We cannot hold the child responsible for sins of the father-two wrongs don't make a right. These women have already been violated once, they need compassion and understanding-not abortion.
Statement: It's a religious issue, you can't legislate morality.
Response: Abortion is not just a religious issue, it is also a human rights issue. This is not the only area where these two interests overlap. For instance, the bible contains the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill", and although we believe in the seperation of church and state, we still have made it illegal to kill.
